Branch Cascading

Hi,

We're considering cascading down to our branch offices (which are all about 90% the same, but in different geographies.) What's the best way to do this?

Samesh,

There are a number of different ways to cascade your scorecards to your branch offices, but in my experience, the best way to do it in the situation you describe is to use a "template" approach. You should create a master strategy map and scorecard, decide what measures and objectives must be shared across scoreards, and what can be changed. Then, you can conduct workshops in each branch where you instruct people on what a scorecard is and let them make changes to their map. This gets people involved and helps build ownership.

We are letting our pilot program be the template. I think Dylan has an interesting idea of letting the divisions have some input to their scorecard, but our organization has chosen another route. We are going to do a quick education session and then otherwise just tell the divisions what their measures and targets will be...no customization.

I think the important thing is to encourage use of the scorecard across the divisions. This can be done in 2 ways, I think.

1) Encourage the right behavior, and reward and recognize units that are embracing the right management concepts.

2) Share best practices. Find the groups that are most successful and share their stories and encourage others to adopt the best practices. Reward both the original best practice and the adopting business unit (or branch office).
