Hall-of-Fame Performance at Century-old Catholic Charities of Boston

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston, which has proved resilient and able overcome numerous challenges, was inducted into the 2012 Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame for Executing Strategy on Tuesday, October 16th, during Palladium’s Global Summit for Executing Strategy in Boston.

In 2008, a recession and charitable giving crisis threatened the very existence of Catholic Charities. Despite these challenges, Catholic Charities’ remained faithful to its core mission: helping those unable to help themselves. With the help of Ascendant Strategy Management Group and the Balanced Scorecard strategy management framework, Catholic Charities of Boston aligned its entire organization around its mission: to serve the neediest poor in Eastern Massachusetts.

By 2009, six months after implementing the Balanced Scorecard, during the busy holiday season, Catholic Charities of Boston was able to increase its food program recipients by 20 percent and over 90 percent of food requests were met. Press mentions, tracked monthly by the Archdiocese, increased, and Catholic Charities was increasingly called upon to serve as a voice and advocate of the neediest in a more positive light. By focusing on the “critical few” measures and projects, Catholic Charities positioned itself to do more with less.

This year, Deborah Rambo, president of Catholic Charities for the Archdiocese of Boston, stated that “a deficit in excess of one million dollars in 2008 has become a modest surplus and staff is more engaged and able to receive more training. As an agency we are well positioned to continually meet the evolving needs of the residents of Eastern Massachusetts.”

The globally recognized and annually-awarded Palladium Hall of Fame for Executing Strategy® honors organizations whose best practices in strategy and performance management have led to extraordinary results. Catholic Charities for the Archdiocese of Boston was presented with the award on October 16, 2012 by Balanced Scorecard developers Drs. David Norton and Robert Kaplan. Past recipients of the award include Fortune 500 firms such as the Sprint Nextel Corporation, Wells Fargo, UPS, Cisco Systems, Inc. and other Ascendant clients such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico and the Citi Performing Arts Center.
