Best Meeting Length
03/26/08 10:30 AM

Hi,

I have my first Balanced Scorecard report meeting scheduled for next week, and I was wondering what the best practice recommendation is for meeting length. I've tenatively booked the executive team for the whole day, but I'm worried that might be too long. Any thoughts?

Jim,

Good question. I am not that far along yet, so I'm interested in the response. I've never been able to get our leadership team to stay focused for a whole day, especially on a new agenda, so I would shoot for less.

Jim -- Your executives might be more focused than mine are, but I've never had any of mine be able to pay attention for more than 3 hours at a time. I keep our meetings to half a day, and ALWAYS bring in coffee and cookies halfway through. It's the little things that make a big difference. -- tina

Hi,

I'm curious, too. My boss just scheduled our first BSC meeting as part of a three-day offsite. I'm concerned that I won't be able to fill up the schedule. Does anyone have any suggestions on an agenda?

Tim,
If you have three days, you need to prepare carefully. I would do an overall scorecard review, and then delve into some specific issues. I would be sure to clearly outline the issues and options, then focus the meeting on discussing options and implications and try to make decisions. It is hard to give advice without knowing more. Good luck.
Jeremy.
